SAP Analytics Cloud

UX + UI INTERNSHIP / 1 YEAR / MAY 2022 - APR 2023

As a part of the SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) design team, I had influence on key product areas related to data visualization and organization. Through this internship I was provided with an extensive breadth of UX product work in both desktop and mobile settings such as running customer feedback sessions, feature deprecation and product merging stages, and third-party product integration.

Familiarizing myself with SAP's robust design systems, I worked with existing assets, components, and interaction patterns to create fully-fledged product workflows.

Team

During my internship I primarily worked with a small design team under the Business Intelligence (BI) area, however much of my project work involved reaching out to multiple departments for context-gathering and collaboration.

Working with our extended SAC team involved consistent meetings with project management teams in Germany and development teams in China.

Context

SAC is an expansive data management and analysis suite developed by SAP that helps businesses keep track of key metrics to make informed decisions.

Most work done during this time is under NDA, but I'd be happy to go through my process with an in-person interview 🙂

Enhancing Theming Capabilities

CUSTOMER INSIGHTS AND IMPROVING WORKFLOWS

My team was responsible for SAC Stories, a product within SAC that lets customers create thorough data dashboards and presentations. My initial work involved expanding upon theming capabilities and organization.

I was able to take ownership of this part of the product area and lead feedback sessions with SAP business customers. Over a month I conducted around 6, 1-hour sessions, with each providing insights into the different ways each of them used SAC.

Theming Processes & Independent Branding

Users often emphasized the importance of applying their company's visual language throughout their dashboards wherever possible. Making dashboards their own rather than appearing to present them as an extension of SAP was crucial.

I worked closely alongside dev to determine which settings could and could not be reflected in their previews, making sure to clearly document these for reference. Dev documentation also included clear property mapping for components within these previews.

This project resulted in creating more than 40 dynamic widget previews that supported font and style changes that provided users with better design judgment.

AI-Driven Data Searching

STRATEGIC FEATURE INTEGRATION

My team was also responsible for SAP's acquisition of AskData, a natural language search tool for datasets. My work involved considering how their product would fit into existing workflows and strategizing which features should be carried over.

Our team met frequently with the AskData team to discuss the extent of their current technologies and features, while we were able to provide context of SAC's own capabilities and current design systems.

With this project I was also able to work in both web and mobile environments, considering limitations for each like adhering to iOS guidelines.

NAVIGATING DESIGN SYSTEM UPDATES

On the side I led an icon library update with my team to better match newer design systems. I conducted audits of existing icon font libraries and collaborated with other brand and system leads to determine focus areas. This resulted in hundreds of updated icons converted into a usable font file for dev and design use.

Takeaways

My time at SAP was constantly supported by exceptional management, leads that supported my growth, as well as frequent company engagement ranging from team-wide design challenges to volunteer opportunities like cleaning up Vancouver's local parks.

Working at a company as large as SAP allowed me to become more independent and initiative since I often found myself having to personally reach out to different development, PM, and design teams to gather project information I needed.

Owning my own processes and truly advocating for my work is still a skill I need to work on, and that will come with further industry experience. Working here helped open my eyes to how larger companies operate versus startups and is definitely an experience I'll take to heart.
